Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. As a young child, Ford battled anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted through word-related associations. Ford began performing in her teens, and was a member of the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time, Ford decided that this was not the best venue for her. Ford decided to apply for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place after her third try made an application and secured acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. He would go on to have recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's television debut was in a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". During the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate would also frequently work in the theatre, and later joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season 2000-2001. Tate received recognition as a stand-up comedian that became part of her portfolio in 1996.
